A Visit to the Pharmacy

Did you know that Nova Scotia has an International Travel Clinic?  They provide consultations for travelers to destinations outside North America.  After a phone-call several weeks ago, they suggested that I might get the Twinrix vaccine, and perhaps Dukoral.

Twinrix is an inoculation against the A and B strains of Hepatitis; Dukoral is a preventative oral vaccine for what is euphemistically called 'travelers' diarrhea.'
And guess what -- my occupational health plan does not cover the cost of these vaccines.  And so about $500.00 later, I am immunized.  Hopefully.

But I had a great chat with my pharmacist about traveling with diabetes.  One of my medications is an injectable that doesn't like to get too warm, and so I will now be carting a refrigerator pack with me.  Not really my idea of a good time, but it is what it is.  Apparently stopping the drug, even with increased exercise, is contra-indicated.  All my other drugs will be in "blister packs" so that I don't have to count out my pills every morning.

Such are the realities of being a diabetic with high blood pressure.  Maybe after 40 days of walking, we can redo my labs and see if things have changed.
