I am starting to pay attention to distances - going out of Villafranca the road sign said Peregrination (for walking) Santago 200km. That means that I have done 3/4 of the Camino, and am entering the final phase. On this part of the Camino, the numbers have thinned out and most of my fellow pilgrims have become introspective and philosophical about their walk.
I was also able to light candles (real, and not electric which are in so many of the churches) in a beautiful little village chapel for John Goodwin and Anne Lively, who have been part of my prayer life while I have been walking. May they rest in peace and rise in glory.
The 'Holy Brierley' as one fellow traveller described the commonly used guidebook recommends 25 to 30 or sometimes more kilometres per day. I have no interest in those kinds of distances, and am quite content to stay in smaller places that have much more charm than the larger centres that mark his stages.
Las Herrerias is a case in point. It is a tiny village whose municipal hostel is run by a young couple who provide vegetarian fare but are not so dogmatic as to not tell residents about the full menu bar with wifi a few doors away. And I was here early enough in the afternoon that I was able to do a load of laundry, which is sometimes a bit of a luxury!
Today's Music: Sheep May Safely Graze (JS Bach...I stumbled on a stone as I was walking in the early light which got that little triplet rhythm going in my head...and then I saw sheep!)
Today's Paces: 24,484
Tomorrow's Prayer Intentions: The Parish of Lantz, especially as they prepare for the Apple Pie Sale!
